Businessman Hugh O’Regan, the hotelier and publican who established The Thomas Read Group, died unexpectedly.
The group owned a large number of Dublin’s most profile pubs, including The Bailey, Pravda, Searson’s and Ron Black’s, as well as the Morrison Hotel. O’Regan started the chain when he bought is first pub in Dublin in 1988, before building it up into Ireland’s biggest pub chain.
He sold a stake in the business in 2002, before eventually bowing out four years later, netting an estimated €35 million in the process.
O’Regan subsequently devoted his time to property development but the business was forced into liquidation in 2009. Loans with a value of €170 million from Irish Nationwide and €80 million were transferred to Nama.
