{"id":794,"date":"2014-03-26T08:25:13","date_gmt":"2014-03-26T08:25:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thebizsense.com\/views\/?p=794"},"modified":"2014-03-26T08:25:13","modified_gmt":"2014-03-26T08:25:13","slug":"promising-themes-invest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thebizsense.com\/views\/investments\/promising-themes-invest","title":{"rendered":"Promising Themes to Invest In"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thebizsense.com\/views\/files\/2014\/03\/Investors.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-796\" title=\"Investors\" alt=\"Investors\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thebizsense.com\/views\/files\/2014\/03\/Investors.jpg\" width=\"590\" height=\"391\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thebizsense.com\/views\/files\/2014\/03\/Investors.jpg 590w, https:\/\/www.thebizsense.com\/views\/files\/2014\/03\/Investors-300x198.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 590px) 100vw, 590px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Equity investors should ignore the \u201cincessant din\u201d of current news and focus on long-term secular trends, advises Morgan Stanley Wealth Management strategist Dan Skelly.<!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>Themes to Invest In<\/h2>\n<p>Such trends \u201ctypically entail innovative or disruptive technologies, resource discoveries, demographic shifts, or changing consumer preferences,\u201d such as US natural-gas infrastructure, the aging baby boomers, China\u2019s healthcare, the emerging market consumer.<\/p>\n<p>Three new ones to consider are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Media content monetization<\/strong>: There are new and increasing revenue streams for providers of hit shows such as broadcast networks and <a title=\"Content Distribution\" href=\"http:\/\/www.all4data.com\" target=\"_blank\">diversified media <\/a>companies.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Key growth drivers for media businesses are rising affiliate and retransmission fees, which are the content provider\u2019s share of the subscription fee a viewer pays a cable or satellite operator, and the fees the operators pay a broadcast or content provider.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn addition, content licensing, distribution agreements with on-line video partners, and growing international pay-TV markets, should support solid growth for the media sector.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>International pay-TV surpassed 50 per cent market penetration in 2012, up from 36 per cent in 2005.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Railroads<\/strong>: Fundamental industry dynamics \u2013 in particular pricing power, have improved dramatically and future price increases averaging 3 to 4 per cent a year are probable.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cRailroads will remain attractive to shippers relative to trucks because they are far more energy-efficient\u2026 The amount of energy expended to transport one ton a distance of one mile by rail is about 20 per cent that of trucks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn addition, railroads have an enormous barrier to entry. The time and astronomical costs required to replicate a vast rail network makes a new entrant very unlikely.\u201d<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>New financial transaction models<\/strong>: There is increasing growth in credit card and debit card business, and market-share gains for e-commerce \u2013 \u201cboth trends are driven by improving technology and consumers\u2019 preference for convenience.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The key beneficiaries are likely to be the leading network-payment companies, because of the sector\u2019s oligopoly-like structure. Expect global-purchase volume to grow at an annual rate of at least 11 per cent over the next few years, driven by increasing electronic payments and faster growth in the emerging economies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOutside Europe and North America, the percentage of the population with banking relationships is still low.\u201d As unbanked individuals enter into such relationships, large numbers are likely to adopt electronic payment methods.<\/p>\n<p>In e-commerce, \u201clong-term opportunities for increasing market share versus brick-and-mortar retailers remain compelling.\u201d As consumers increasingly go on-line for greater choice, competitive pricing, and time-saving convenience, e-commerce penetration will accelerate, both in the US and elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe favour
