SA still an attractive investment destination
Posted by: newsroom - 02-07-2015, 12:32 PM - Forum: Southern Africa - No Replies

South Africa is still an attractive destination to those who are interested in mineral investments, says Chamber Mines President Mike Teke.

Addressing the Economic Policy Dialogue in Pretoria, on Monday, Teke said the Chamber of Mines was excited about the Mining Phakisa operation which was recently announced by the government.

He said the Mining Phakisa would assist the mining sector to address issues which include how to encourage investment growth and transformation in the mining industry. Other issues to be looked at would include creating a more conducive environment for manufacturing to be competitive and how to provide a stable and competitive environment policy legislative and regulatory environment.

“We are participating [in Mining Phakisa] and the kick off meetings have started.

“The mining industry needs to focus on growing globally competitive mining companies, to facilitate the investment into South Africa as the National Development Plan talks about,” Teke said.

He said the Mining sector has improved safety in the mines adding that in 1993 the industry had 593 fatalities, in 2003 it had 270, in 2013 the number was below a 100 and last year the industry had 83 fatalities.

“We take this industry seriously; we take all these issues that relate to fatalities seriously and beneficiation itself very seriously,” Teke said.

The dialogue focused on the challenges and opportunities for South Africa in its path for mineral beneficiation.

South Africa’s mining sector contributes 7.6 percent to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), 26 percent of merchandise exports, around 50 percent of mining and mining related merchandise in terms of exports, he said.

The mining industry also contributed 18.7 percent of the JSE market capitalisation and 14 percent to foreign direct investment in 2013.

The sector employs about 500 000 people and almost 1.3 million indirect employees.

Institute for African Alternatives Director Professor Ben Turok, who was also a speaker at the Economic Policy Dialogue, called on the government and the private sector to work together to repair the state of the economy.

“The time has come for us to say that this is a mixed economy in which the State and the private sector has to find ways and means of working together, each one from their position of strength, from mutual respect and understanding,” Professor Turok said.

He said big business, even foreign multinational corporations are very dependent on the State and the State is very dependent on the private sector.

“The State does things that the private sector will not do and where large investments are required.

“We need to understand….the dependency on big business on the State…. Procurement from government is key especially in the mining sector and industrial sector,” he said.

Professor Turok said big business is also dependent on the State for legislation, regulation, macro-economic stability and fiscal policy. – SAnews.gov.za

SA youth encouraged to possess entrepreneurial spirit
Posted by: newsroom - 24-06-2015, 02:54 PM - Forum: Southern Africa - No Replies

Pretoria - South African youth ought to be more entrepreneurial in their employment outlook, as opposed to merely being job seekers.

On Wednesday, the Deputy Minister for Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation in the Presidency, Buti Manamela, spoke at The New Age Business briefing held at Sandton, in Johannesburg.

He was on a panel together with National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) Chairperson Yershen Pillay and Songstress and Activist Simphiwe Dana.

Dana said the youth of today, unlike those who suffered under the apartheid regime, have a different struggle of sitting at home with post matric qualifications and struggling to find jobs.

“There are so many of our young people sitting at home with degrees; they can’t find jobs,” she said.

Dana said she picked up that, during the recent attacks on foreign nationals that occurred in South Africa, most South African youth lacked the spirit of entrepreneurship as compared to most African countries.

She encouraged youth to be more entrepreneurial, adding that sometimes youth are not able to exploit opportunities at their disposal because they are not entrepreneurial in spirit.

“We need to empower young people and make them aware that the future is in their hands. Let them know that as much as government is doing for you, you must also do for yourself and the country,” she said.

She also encouraged government to change its approach when addressing youth, especially the use of political language. She said youth want to be heard and spoken to in a language that is simple and understandable.

The Deputy Minister reiterated Dana’s words, adding that government does not only want young people to look for jobs but to create them, and set up businesses.

“The appetite for young people to get into businesses in South Africa is lowest in Southern Africa and in the continent,” said the Deputy Minister.

He said the NYDA and other youth entities are increasing their capacity for aspirant entrepreneurs and will also assist in mentorship.

The Deputy Minister said the Presidency has held various talks with youth from various sectors with regard to the draft of the National Youth Policy, which addresses issues such as youth development, youth unemployment and access to quality education in public schools, also support for youth businesses and social cohesion.

“Youth are concerned about drugs that are easily available in their communities, issues like teenage pregnancy as well. These are some of the issues we seek to address,” said Deputy Minister Manamela.

He said some of the interventions that government has in the policy includes targeted youth employment programmes and providing young people with skills.

He said most young people want to go to universities, but the challenge is that the majority are enrolled for humanities.

“For the economic direction our country is taking, we need engineers… we need plumbers, welders and all those types of skills that will not only help young people be employed but also start up enterprises,” he said.

He said although government encourages youth to consider careers in engineering, it will not ignore those who want to pursue careers in the arts and recreations.

He said although South African youth are faced with many challenges, they remain positive about the future.

Pillay weighed in and encouraged the civil society and business sector to assist in youth development, adding that the NYDA has progressed well in the past two years to reach out to more young people, but it still has a long way to go.

He said the repositioning of the NYDA has seen all social partners take on the responsibility, including civil society and private sector.

“We have also launched a number of new programmes that are critical for youth development. Youth development is not one dimensional, it involves economic and social development, life skills, among others. Youth development has to be the business of all,” he said. - SAnews.gov.za

Peru trade mission to increase trade
Posted by: newsroom - 25-05-2015, 10:13 AM - Forum: Africa - No Replies

Trade and Industry (dti) Minister Rob Davies says the trade mission to Peru that the department is undertaking forms part of efforts to improve bilateral trade relations and increasing trade and investment in Latin America.

“In 2013 we undertook a technical mission to Peru and Chile with the aim of scoping the market and identifying trade and investment opportunities for South African products and services, including opportunities for joint ventures.

“Based on the recommendations of the technical mission, our department supported 21 companies on an Outward Trade and Investment Mission (OTIM) to Peru and Chile, last year. This year, we are not only taking 18 companies to Peru, but we will also be sending officials on a scoping mission to Colombia,” said Minister Davies.

This as the dti will be accompanying 18 business people to the Peru’s capital Lima from 24 to 29 May.

The Minister added that the mission underscores the department’s efforts to build mutually beneficial regional and global relations to advance South Africa’s trade, industrial policy and economic development objectives.

“The mission to Peru will provide the South African companies with an opportunity to penetrate the Latin American market which is not only about Brazil, but more about the Pacific Alliance, a trade bloc that includes Chile, Colombia, Peru and Mexico.

“The bloc offers greater export and investment opportunities. Brazil is not only our partner in the Brics (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) and IBSA (India, Brazil and SA) blocs, but they are already our largest trading partner in Latin America. We have identified a need to strengthen bilateral trade relations with other countries in the region including Peru,” explained Minister Davies.

Minister Davies said one of the dti’s strategic goals is to grow the South African manufacturing sector in order to promote industrial development, job creation, investment and exports.

To achieve this objective, the department embarks on international missions in order to promote exports of South African value-added goods and services to increase market share in markets in various regions of the world. This will enable South African businesses to access global markets which will lead to them increasing their production, thereby growing the South African economy and creating employment.

According to the World Bank, Peru, with a population of more than 30 million people, is one of Latin America’s fastest growing economies and is expected to remain as such in the medium term. The most recent estimates of real Gross Domestic Product growth of 3.5% for 2014 are above the regional average of 1.2%. – SAnews.gov.za

International Relations and Cooperation Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane and her delegation have arrived in Tehran for the 12th meeting of the SA-Iran Joint Commission.

The commission remains one of South Africa’s longest-serving and most successful structured bilateral mechanisms.

The 12th session will afford the two countries the opportunity to engage in deliberations related to geo-political and peace and security developments in their respective regions. SA and Iran will also review the status of bilateral relations and assess the potential for enhanced cooperation.

The two countries enjoy cooperation across varied fields, including arts and culture, agriculture, education and health, and the potential for the expansion thereof remains positive.

South Africa considers Iran to be an important friend and partner and recognises the important role Iran assumes regionally and internationally within global governance and multilateral architecture, particularly as the incumbent chair of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM).

The delegation led by Minister Nkoana-Mashabane includes the Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry, Mzwandile Masina, as well as senior government officials from the Departments of Energy, Treasury, Water and Sanitation, as well as Science and Technology. – SAnews.gov.za

  SA, Egypt revive working relationship
Posted by: newsroom - 07-04-2015, 03:10 PM - Forum: Africa - No Replies

South Africa and Egypt have agreed to revitalise and elevate bilateral relations to a new level, given the many common challenges both countries face.

This emerged after President Jacob Zuma’s working visit to Egypt on Thursday, where he held discussions with his Egyptian counterpart, President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi, on issues related to bilateral relations and developments on the continent and globally.

"We have agreed to reconvene, as a matter of priority, the South Africa-Egypt Joint Bilateral Commission with the aim of consolidating areas of cooperation and to identify new areas of collaboration.

“It is imperative that existing bilateral agreements are implemented and that progress in the implementation of these agreements is regularly reported on in the Bilateral Commission,” said President Zuma.

President Zuma said they have agreed to accelerate trade and investment by urging respective business sectors to utilise the many opportunities that the two countries have to offer.

These include the Tripartite Free Trade Agreement and the development of the North-South Corridor, which President Zuma said will boost regional economic integration.

“We also agreed on the need to partner on infrastructure development, linked to the ongoing Nepad-related projects.”

With regards to developments in the region, the two Presidents agreed to collaborate to resolve the many challenges facing the continent.

"We agreed that it is now urgent to find, through peaceful means and dialogue, a political solution to the crises confronting countries in conflict situations.

“In this regard, regional organisations such as the African Union and the Arab League have an important role to play in that process,” said President Zuma.

They also reviewed the peace and security situation in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA).

On the multilateral front, both sides agreed that the reform of global institutions such as the United Nations and the UN Security Council in particular, must take place as a matter of priority.

"South Africa and Egypt agreed to engage on the matter of UN Reform in line with Africa's position, as contained in the Ezulwini Consensus,” said President Zuma.

The Ezulwini Consensus is a position on international relations and reform of the United Nations, agreed by several African governments. The consensus is named after Ezulwini, a valley in central Swaziland, where the agreement was made in 2005.

President Zuma said discussions were conducted in a spirit of openness and frankness, befitting the strategic nature of relations between the two countries. - SAnews.gov.za
