Food Tourism Helps Boost Economy

North Wales

North Wales

According to Visit Wales, the tourism industry in North Wales already injects £2.1 billion a year into the Welsh economy, with visitors to Wales on average spending almost a fifth of their holiday budget on food & drink, providing over 200,000 people with jobs in the food industry across the country.

Producers in North Wales are arguably the best in Wales, walking away with over 20 awards across the 23 categories at the 2012 True Taste awards in October.

Dewi Davies Regional Strategy Director for Tourism Partnership North Wales said: “It’s long been known that tourism and food go hand in hand, but few places in the UK can offer the same level of quality food and service as North Wales. We’re really proud of our local produce, so by providing information on local food through the Food North Wales website, we can help drive more visitors to the region, promote the high quality of local businesses in the area and support in growing the local economy.”

The Food Tourism action plan also revealed 82% of visitors to Wales stated that good quality locally produced food is a very important part of their holiday experience, and they would pay up to 13% more to experience it, helping drive all important revenue for local producers.
